When it comes to selling your home, you might think that renovating the kitchen or bathroom would be the ticket to getting more potential buyers into the front door. But there’s an action you can take that won’t cost you anything, and can lead to great results — getting rid of your clutter.
So how do you handle selling your home with junk? No one wants to buy a home and then find out that they got more than they bargained for when they discover decades worth of holiday decorations in the attic, or piles of newspapers in a box in the garage. You should expect that potential buyers are going to notice small details, and that means opening every closet, drawer, and door to see what you are hiding. But don’t worry about your coffee mug collection, there is a way to attack decluttering strategically, with these tips for how to declutter your home that will have the job done in no time.
Put things where they belong
It may sound simple, but you can do wonders for a messy home, and have a more realistic assessment of how big of a job you have in front of you, by putting things away. Move dirty clothes to the laundry room, wash dishes that are in the sink, sort the mail, take out the recycling. You may be surprised at the amount of clutter that are just items that aren’t where they belong.
Get on the KonMari bandwagon
You’ve no doubt heard of Mari Kondo, and her KonMari method of dealing with clutter, outlined in her book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.” But we’ll tell you the basics of her method, to save you time. The key is to go through your belongings in groups — for example, those coffee mugs — and then assess if the item “sparks joy.” Do you love it? Do you use it often? If the answers are no, the item doesn’t make the cut.
Work room by room, but start small
A secret to decluttering is to not get overwhelmed, by starting small, moving from room to room. One place to begin might be the bathroom as you can likely finish it quickly, feel accomplished, and move on to the rest of your house. In the bathroom, the biggest clutter culprit is likely expired products and medications, or half-empty bottles of lotions, and let’s not forget hotel toiletries. If you haven’t used it in years, or ever, it’s time to toss it.
Use a sorting method
One way to slow down your decluttering is by weighing whether or not you should keep something that holds sentimental value for you, like your high school soccer jersey that you haven’t worn in years, yet can’t seem to part with. To remedy this problem, you can use boxes to sort everything into groups for keep, donate, toss, and later. The “later” box can be a box that goes into storage and helps you move along more quickly through everything in your home.
In just one weekend, you might find that your house has gone from disorder to order, bringing you one step closer to showing it off to potential buyers.
